Thanksgiving message from Dana White

Posted in Thanksgiving message from Dana White on November 26, 2009 by thatmmaguy

• I’m thankful, first and foremost, for my family and friends. My good friends — and yes, I do have some of them — the real ones who are there through it all, even when stuff goes bad.

• I’m obviously very, very thankful for the UFC and for guys like Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Forrest Griffin, guys who have been real partners to us and who have really helped us build this business.

• I’m thankful for Bruce Lee. I’ve said it a million times: He’s the father of mixed martial arts. He was so far ahead of his time.

• I’m very thankful for technology. It’s funny to think that when we started the UFC, the only way we could distribute was through three pay-per-view outlets. Now, we’ve got streaming on the Internet, video blogs and everything else.

• I’m thankful for Twitter, which took me awhile to warm up to at first but now I have a blast and it’s one of my favorite ways to connect with the fans of the sport.

• I’m thankful for Pinkberry. I love Pinkberry! I’m like addicted to it. I’m very thankful for my favorite: a large original with Fruity Pebbles. So good, I get really excited about Pinkberry.

• I’m thankful for food, in general. I’m not thankful for how much I love to eat, though. You go out and buy all these nice suits and then you gotta try to stay in ’em. I’m thankful for my suit pants — they’re the referee in trying to keep my weight down. That’s my thing, I don’t ever change my waist size. I keep it the same, and if they start to get tight, then I have to lose weight.

• Caffeine and coffee — none of that makes my list. I don’t touch any of it. Never. No thanks. Listen to me, do you think I need it? I hate it. I’d be a lunatic if I had caffeine.

• Shaving your head is no fun endeavor, let me tell you. It has taken a lot of trial and error, but there’s something I’m very thankful for, sweetheart — the Venus razor. You know the chick razor with the gooey stuff on the side? Yeah, that’s what I shave my head with, it’s true. Funny, right? I’d look like a nicked-up freak without that thing.

• I’m thankful for Canada. Those fans up there are awesome. If the United States MMA market was like the Canadian market, the UFC would be even bigger than it is now.

• I’m thankful for the day and age that I can wear a T-shirt to a big meeting.

• I will occasionally go out and drink. I told you I’m thankful for my buddies, but I’m not thankful for what they do to me. One of my buddies I grew up with, my old roommate from Boston, Donny, came out here to Vegas this week. I haven’t seen him in years so we have been going hard every night, nonstop. I’m very thankful that he’s going home and I hope I don’t see him for another 10 years!

• It sounds funny saying this but I’m really thankful that I got to experience so many places and meet all kinds of people in different cultures. Boston was really different from Vegas. And Las Vegas is really different than Levant, Maine. I’m thankful I had the chance to live the difference.

• I’m thankful for Las Vegas. I honestly and truly think it’s the greatest city on Earth. It is for me and guys like me, anyway. I go a million miles an hour no matter what and this is the city built for that. It’s always open. There’s always excitement and energy and something to do. That’s me. That’s who I am and that’s the life I live. I’m very thankful for this city that never disappoints.

• I’m thankful for the jet. That makes travel a little easier.

• I’m thankful for the passionate, psychotic lunatics who are the fans of the UFC. Not only will they come and blast me when they think something’s wrong, they also travel all over the place, buy the events, stand by the sport, and I’m very thankful for their energy and support.

• I love this life. I have so much to be thankful for. I’m reminded of that every single day.

Brock Lesnars camp: He needs 6 months for reincarnation

Posted in Brock Lesnars camp says he needs 6 months for reincarnation on November 21, 2009 by thatmmaguy

What was said to be very serious seems to be not so serious. Brock Lesnars camp claims that it will take at least 6 months for the “reincarnation of Brock Lesnar”. Lesnars Brazilian jiu jitsu coach talked to TMZ stating “I can just say that the heavyweights can stop laughing and all start crying because the champion will be back soon”. considering the fact that no heavyweight including Shane Carwin or Frank Mir was laughing at the champs illness and were in fact hoping for a speedy recovery, that statement makes no sence at all but I can guarantee that any UFC heavyweight will be ready. Either way Lesnars camp seems to be using tactics to keep Lesnar in the picture with releasing a Brock Lesnar “Reincarnation” video. This video is more like a statement to the rest of the UFC heavyweight division saying “Lesnar may have got sick but when he comes back, he comes back reincarnated”. Sounds scary to me. Maybe a more technical Lesnar? We shall see. Check out the reincarnation video below.

What do you think about a reincarnated Brock Lesnar?

Karo “The Heat” Parisyan is banned from the UFC

Posted in Karo Parisyan Banned from the UFC on November 20, 2009 by thatmmaguy

Yesterday Dana White announced on his twitter that Karo “The Heat” Parisyan has pulled out of this saturdays UFC 106 event. Stating “Karo Parisyan has F’d over the UFC, his fans and his opponent again”. White said “He will not be fighting saturday or ever again in the UFC”. In a follow-up tweet after I’m sure he was bombarded with why is Karo not fighting questions, White wrote “Pulled out of the fight a day before weigh-ins again with a laundry list of excuses”.

So far the word/ rumor around the MMA world-wide web is the belief that Karo might be struggling with a drug addiction to pain killers. Karo (who was set to fight Dustin Hazelett this saturday at UFC 106) had problems in the his most recent fight when he won a controversal split decision over Kim Dong-hyun that was later overtuned (no contest) because an after fight drug test showed that he had tested positive for 3 types of painkillers. The Nevada State Athletic Commission then suspended him for 9 months leading up to his fight at UFC 106. So what’s with the shadyness of pulling out the day before weigh-ins?

Karo has since came out and said that he did not want to have to pay the $35 grand to the NSAC to be able to fight again. Seems more like a cop-out to me. It seems as if he does have an addiction problem that he may need to work out and Dana White may have to understand and not shun but offer help. Pulling out at the last-minute to me seems like he doesn’t want to go thru the whole ordeal twice aswell as with the NSAC. Who would? I’m sure the UFC wouldn’t.

My friend Aaron Tru: The man who Cris Cyborg choked out

Posted in Meet the reporter who Cris Cyborg choked out on November 18, 2009 by thatmmaguy

I got to become friends with Aaron Tru (who has interviewed the best fighters in the sport) thru facebook after I saw an interview that he had and we bonded on an MMA fan level where he has been in the game for a while and I just started out in the summer of 09. I asked if he would check out my website and give me his thoughts and criticism on how I could make it better aswell as how to get more readers. Aaron was very cool and not stand “offish” and did in fact help me in these areas. For example, I had an article about Strikeforce and I incorrectly spelt the Strikeforce CEO’s name by calling him Scott Cocker instead of Scott Coker. Obviously he found it amusing and I felt a little embarrassed making such a tiny mistake as I fixed it immediately. Ever since Aaron has been a big help using his name to create MMA facebook pages in which he (unlike other MMA facebook pages) lets up and comers like myself post our work so that we can get more viewers to our page so that we don’t think we are wasting our time. Additionally to his help with creating MMA pages for us to post on, he recently asked if I wanted to exchange links which I must admit made my day. Let’s be honest, he is on a whole different MMA level than I and I receive an average of 100 views a day yet he is nice enough to exchange links which would up that 100 quite a bit. Either way I would like to say thank you to Aaron Tru and in his honor I will post his two battles between Strikeforce womans champ Cris “Cyborg” Santos.

Enjoy and meet (if you haven’t already) my friend Aaron Tru.

Ouch Aaron. Maybe Eddie Bravo can help you with some rear naked choke defense?

Alright buddy, looks like your ready for that rematch.

Don’t worry Aaron, you will get your rubber match.

There you have it. You have met Aaron Tru. A true MMA reporter who keeps his interviews and his questions different from the rest. For more Aaron Tru, you can check him out at…………..

UFC 105 Bombshell: Brock Lesnar is extremely ill

Posted in UFC 105 bombshell Brock Lesnar is seriously ill on November 15, 2009 by thatmmaguy

After UFC 105 was done and over with, Dana White had a major announcement that stunned the MMA world. That announcement was that not only will Brock Lesnar not be able to compete in his already re-scheduled UFC 108 bout with Shane Carwin but he might not ever be able to compete in the sport due to his undisclosed but very serious illness. It was even serious enough to the point that Dana was talking about stripping his heavyweight title and or creating another interim heavyweight championship belt depending on how serious the illness is.

White didn’t give out what the champ was suffering from but he did say that the champ had mono before going on a “relaxing trip” to Canada that turned out made whatever it is that he has worst as he was rushed to the hospital. White also explained that he would figure out all this mess next week when he meets with Lesnar and his people.

Love him or hate him, lets hope for the best for the big guy. Lets also hope that we can see the Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin fight.

UFC 105 Predictions

Posted in UFC 105 Predictions on November 10, 2009 by thatmmaguy

UFC 105

UFC 105 is going to be another interesting event that could send a lot of fighters into the higher rankings. Most importantly is that the event is free on spike and that just saved me $44.99. This event also opens up some questions like does Randy Couture still have what it takes to make a run at the light heavyweight title? Did Michael Bisping bounce back from that devastating KO that Dan Henderson handed to him? Or can my fellow Canadian Denis Kang upset our common wealth brothers to the east? One thing is for sure and that all these questions will be answered for free this saturday.

1st Fight: Ross Pearson vs Aaron Riley

My Prediction: Aaron Riley via decision

2nd Fight: James Wilks vs Matt Brown

My Prediction: James Wilks via submission

3rd Fight: Michael Bisping vs Dennis Kang

My Prediction: Michael Bisping via decision

Co Main Event: Mike Swick vs Dan Hardy

My Prediction: Mike Swick via decision

Main Event: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera

My Prediction: Brandon Vera via TKO

There you have them, now go make some money. Kidding, ThatMMAGuy doesnt want to have to pay anyone if I’m wrong which 80% of the time, I am not. Anyway, see you on saturday and I hope you aren’t going to pay for that boxing event.

Fedor vs Rogers Full Fight

Posted in Fedor vs Rogers Full Fight on November 8, 2009 by thatmmaguy

Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers proved to be a great main card with 4 great fights. I went 4 out of 4 with my predictions with a few surprise endings to the fights. Overall Fedor vs Rogers was everything a MMA fan could have hoped for with The Last Emperor retaining his spot as The God of MMA. If you missed the fight, never fear because ThatMMAGuy is here. Check out this amazing fight below.

It’s amazing to watch the Michael Jordan, the Wayne Gretzky, the Tiger Woods of MMA. Let’s hope his next opponent will be Alistair Overeem so Strikeforce can have a real heavyweight champion.

Highlights from Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers press conference

Posted in Strikeforce Fedor vs Rogers presser highlights on November 6, 2009 by thatmmaguy

I don’t know about anyone else but I think it’s funny as hell to see a guy like Mayhem Miller sitting right next to a guy like Fedor. Could you see those two guys drinking vodka after the event? Something tells me that Fedor probably thinks Mayhem is some what of an ass with his extremely out-going personality compared to the calm cool nature of Fedor. Needless to say, the highlights of the “presser” were entertaining and has me even more excited about the event. You can watch the highlights below.

Watch Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers this saturday 11/7/09 on CBS at 8:00 EST to watch an amazing card featuring Fedor Emelianenko against Brett Rogers, Jason “Mayhem” Miller against Jake Shields, Gegard Mousasi vs Sokoudjou and Fabricio Werdum vs Antonio “Big Foot” Silva.

Strikeforce Fedor vs Rogers picks

Posted in Strikeforce Fedor vs Rogers picks on November 5, 2009 by thatmmaguy

Strikeforce is not playing around with the Fedor vs Rogers main card. Not only will the greatest mixed martial artist be headlining the event, Strikeforce has put together 3 other big name fights to get us ready for the main event. In the co main event will be a battle for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight championship belt between MTV star Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Jake Shields. The beauty of all of this aswell is that it’s free on CBS this saturday.

Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko vs Brett “The Grim” Rogers – This fight is huge and can really be seen either way. In Fedors most recent fight which was against Andrei Arlovski last January, he showed some striking flaws against Arlovski until Arlovski got too confident and threw a flying knee that ended with him getting KO’ed. Brett Rogers most latest fight was also against Arlovski and he KO’ed Andrei in 14 seconds. It’s most likely fair to say that Fedor will have to get Rogers to the ground to avoid getting an upsetting KO, and he would have to get him to the ground quick in my opinion.

Pick: Fedor Emelianenko via 1st round submission

Jason “Mayhem” Miller vs Jake Shields – This fight is an exciting one. Both of these men are hungry for the belt which means that this is going to be a brawl. Both mens styles are similar. Shields might have the edge on the ground with his bjj and Mayhem has the edge on his feet but does not have KO power. I’m predicting that just like every Mayhem fight, this will be a ground fight.

Pick: Jake Shields via decision

Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi vs Rameau Thierry “African Assassin” Sokoudjou – Another “little Fedor” fight but this time it’s not for the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship. Originally slated for DREAM 12, the bout was moved to this Strikeforce card. This should be an entertaining fight but I’m not seeing this one going to the judges.

Pick: Gegard Mousasi via 2nd round submission

Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum vs Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva – Fabricio Werdum is one tough guy who in my opinion should still be in the UFC. Bigfoot Silva is no slouch either only loosing 1 of his MMA fights but he is stepping into dangerous territory with Werdum who has KO’ed other big Brazilians like Gabriel Gonzaga.

Pick: Werdum via 2nd round TKO

There you have my picks for the Strikeforce: Fedor vs Rogers card. This is going to be a night of must see fights and I am excited to see the results of this amazing card. Tune in this saturday on CBS at 8:00 pm EST.
