After hearing the upsetting news that #2 ranked heavyweight fighter Josh Barnett would not be able to compete against #1 ranked fighter Fedor Emelianenko 11 days prior to the august 1st bout, Affliction Entertainment began searching for a qualified opponent to replace Barnett. With just 11 days to find a worthy opponent for the #1 ranked Emelianenko, Affliction definately found themself in a pickle.
Although fighters such as Vitor Belfort (who was scheduled to fight on the same card for a middleweight bout), King Mo and even Brett Rogers (of knocking out Andrei Arlovski in 22 seconds fame) where of those to step up. It had just seemed that due to marketing for such a promotion in 11 days was not enough and Affliction ended up canceling the whole event thanks to the 3 time steroid offender Josh Barnett.
So, Where will the #1 ranked Fedor Emelianenko end up next? UFC, Strikeforce, Dream or will he just end up fighting for his company which he apparently owns 20% of, M1 Global?
In my opinion throughout these last 2 crazy weeks since the announcement and then the cancelation of the bout, that I believe Fedor will fight in the UFC. My reason is fairly simple. Dana White wants Fedor. Everyone wants Fedor but the fact is that the UFC is the largest MMA organization in the world and it wants Fedor.
That being said how come Fedor hasn’t been in the UFC yet then? Two years ago before Affliction expanding out of just the highly popular MMA apparel, the UFC was in negotiations with Fedor. Dana Whites demand for Fedor then was cleary not as strong as it is now and negotiations fell through with Dana referring to Fedors management as “Mad Russians”.
Why did the negotiations fall through you might ask? Whose fault was it really? In my opinion, it’s just a difference in American and Russian business as well as culture. With Fedors management wanting to do cross promotion with the UFC and M1 global, Fedors constant need for cold potato soup and a higher wage then everyone else, Dana was not having it. Dana White is known for not wanting to cross promote and he is also known for going on the record to say that Fedor is over rated. So why would these issues change two years later?
The demand for Fedor is how. The UFC has offered Fedor $30 million for a 6 fight deal, guaranteed 1st fight title shot at Brock Lesnar, M1 global can have a peice of Fedors fights and ofcourse Fedor can have his cold potato soup at all times. Thats nice alright. Although it’s been reported that Strikeforce potentially offered more money, Strikeforce does not have the views the UFC has and that would easily dent any cross promotion M1 Global would have with Strikeforce.
In the end I truely believe that we will see that Dream fight between Fedor and Brock Lesnar and it will happen sooner than later. Dana White has called a press conference for tomorrow July 31st and has said that he will be announcing a whole bunch of new things that will make our MMA world spin round. But we all know what we really want to hear.
This is my first Blog on the MMA subject so please leave comments and tell me what you think.
